Why do we train?

Training seeks to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Increase productivity
  • Reduce employee turnover
  • Decrease the need for supervision
  • Increase the ability to incorporate new technologies
  • Increase safety to decrease work related injury/ illness
  • Maintain employee credentials
  • Help employees meet new responsibilities
  • Increase job satisfaction, morale and motivation among employees.

Where do you carry out/conduct training?

Training can be on the job or off the job:

On the job training takes place in a normal working environment using the actual tools, equipment, documents or materials that trainees will use when fully trained. On the job training has a general reputation as being most effective for vocational work as it involves employee training at their place of work while the individual is doing the actual job.

Off the job training takes place away from normal work situations. It often utilises lecturers, case studies, role playing and simulation, having the advantage of allowing people to get away from work and concentrate more thoroughly on the training itself.

When do you carry out training?

Training occurs whenever there is need to:

  • Adapt to changes in technology
  • Increase productivity
  • Manage transition during mergers and acquisitions – culture change etc
  • When new products are introduced
  • With new employees (induction training)
  • When the financial resources are available (budget).

Is there a connection between training and your salary?

Yes - every employer should place each of their employees in a trade or occupation and in a class of skill or grade appropriate to their trade and training, and pay each employee a wage appropriate for the grade or occupation.

Is an employer required to provide training in terms of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs)?

Every CBA invariably provides that every employer, acting in terms of section 3 of the Manpower Planning and Development Act, 1984, may offer training and work facilities to, and such facilities may be accepted by, a member or student of a university, or a member or student of a vocational and training institution.
