Become an IT person and make your mark

Kombe Kaponda, an Information Technology (IT) professional says apart from a high school certificate, an interest in technology and its trends is essential to start a career in IT.

“You can’t make in IT if you do not have major interest in technology, because learning never stops in this industry. In addition, for those who end up working as Networks and Systems Engineers, they are usually on call 24/7,” he said “Yes, you are around your job almost all the time but if technology is in your blood, then you will not see it as working. As a bonus, the career enhancements or job prospects are dynamic as ongoing technology changes.”

A minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Electronic Engineering ensures a comfortable start in the industry. People in IT sectors, depending on the specialisation from a data entry clerk to consultant engineers, can earn between US$400 to US$4000 per month.

Kaponda said although the IT sector in Zambia was male dominated, the situation had began to change. Culture related issues that prevented women from working in careers that were considered for men had been broken and more women were taking up the challenge and succeeding.
