Zambia Congress of Trade Unions: Vision and Mission
The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is the largest labour federation in Zambia, and also the oldest. It was established in 1965, a year after Zambia’s independence.
It represents nearly 30 affiliate national unions with a worker-membership of close to 350,000 in nearly all the sectors of the national economy. Zambia’s formal sector employment is estimated at 500,000.
Mission and Vision of the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions
The ZCTU is a democratic membership-based workers representative organisation committed to the promotion and protection of the interests and rights of workers in Zambia. It strives to promote harmonious workplace co-operation and understanding which enhances trust and confidence among the social partners, especially the employers, government and other stakeholders.
ZCTU’s vision as a labour federation is to organise and unite all workers in Zambia, both in formal and informal sectors, into a unified, strong and self-sustaining labour Movement (ZCTU). It will then be used as a springboard for attaining sustainable socio-economic development, social justice and equity and good governance its widest meaning.
The movement regards itself as an indispensable partner in the socio-economic development and governance of Zambia with a co-mission to:
- Contribute to the transformation of Zambia into a proud nation free from poverty and inequality and injustice in line with the Decent Work Agenda of the International labour Organisation (ILO)
- Ensure that socio-economic polarisation is not allowed so that pockets of grotesque wealth and affluence are not allowed to exist in the midst of obscene levels of poverty and human misery. Also fight for the establishment of a poverty datum line which shall be used as an objective basis for determining decent wages for all workers, especially in setting up the Minimum Wage
- Ensure that employers and government respect workers rights as enshrined in ILO Conventions and Recommendations.
