How can I find a job in Tanzania?

You can search for work in a number of ways:

  • Reading media for advertisements, i.e. newspapers and websites and blogs that are popularly known for showing job adverts.
  • Regularly visiting the websites of the companies that you would like to work for. Some companies post their vacancies on their website and not in the general media.
  • Networking with friends, colleagues, family and business acquaintances to find out what is available in the job field.
  • Making use of a recruitment agency. You can send them your current CV and cover letter/application letter. Remember to include your daytime contacts including mobile number, email address and postal address.
  • Visiting the national job match agencies like TaESA (Tanzania Employment Services Agency) for information on existing vacancies.

How should I apply for a job?

Once you have the necessary information on the existence of a vacancy for which you qualify or you want to apply for be sure to remember the following:

  • Send a formal cover letter, with the subject matching that of your CV. Make sure you have followed all the formal letter-writing tips and included your contact details. When you have done this, wait a couple of days for the company to contact you.
  • Make sure that you are sending your application to the right address. This is normally provided when the vacancy is announced, and you can also check on the company’s website. You may also wish to make a follow-up phone call to the company to find out if they have received your application and if there is any progress with it.
  • Keep your CV short and clear, with your abilities and skills listed on the first page.
  • Tailor make your cover letter by emphasising your skills that match those specified in the job advertisement.
  • Prepare all your supporting documents such as academic certificates, referees letters, and any other relevant content. It is recommended to have them scanned in case you are required to email them. If you scan the documents make sure you save them as PDF documents.

Emailing your applications

  • Make sure that you are using your personal email address if this is the preferred approach or the address box which is owned by your family or a very close relative for timely receiving of any feedback.
  • Always send your cover letter, CV and other supporting documents as one email and its attachments. It is good to have a checklist to ensure that all necessary documents have been included.
  • When you have sent it, wait for the feedback. Make sure your mobile phone and other contact channels are reachable.
