Finding a job can take time and requires patience. However, with access to the internet as well as offline resources, your job search can be made easier.

Getting started

  • Make sure your resume/CV is up to date.
  • Make a list of jobs you would really like to have.
  • Check to see if your skills match your dream job.
  • Make a note of any work-related skills you would like to learn/improve on.

Looking for work

Online

Using the internet to search for jobs is one of the quickest ways to see what work is being offered, what qualifications and experience are required, and sometimes even what salaries are being offered.

Use search engines and access reputable job sites to see which companies are hiring. Use key words that relate to the kind of job you are looking for. Some job sites request you to submit your CV online, so make sure you have it ready and up to date.

You can also go to the websites of companies you are interested in working for, and see if they are hiring. Some companies have a special section on their website to advertise jobs. Research the companies, and find out about potential employers online.

If you do find a job you are interested in online, make sure you follow the steps that the company requires. Must you post a CV in the mail? Must you submit details online? Must you telephone the company? It is important that you follow up correctly.

Social networking

You can use social networks – both online and offline – to find out what jobs are being offered. One way to do this is to make a list of all of your friends, relatives and acquaintances. Contact them and ask them if they know of any openings for which they could recommend you.

Use social networks such as Facebook to build your profile online. List your strengths and experience. State what you are looking for, and what you can offer. Create a strong impression!

Offline

Not all companies or businesses advertise online. Check your local newspapers regularly. Most have an advertising section that will feature jobs. You can also find jobs advertised in trade magazines. For example, if there is an industry or area of work you are keen on, such as engineering, then get hold of engineering trade magazines and check their listings.

Using an employment agency

You can also make use of an employment agency to help you find a job. Most employment agencies will need to see your up to date CV, and will usually call you in for an interview to assess your skills, experience and qualifications. The agency will then try and place you in a company that best fits your requirements.

You can find employment agencies online, or in the telephone book.

How can I use my time in between jobs?

Don’t just sit back and wait for the calls to come in! Use your time productively – it’s also a good way to impress potential employers. Brush up on you skills, take short courses in areas you feel you need to improve, or volunteer.

What if I don’t have any work experience?

You can always stress the positive sides of your CV, such as your academic qualifications or skills training. You can also do volunteer work or work as an intern while waiting for full-time employment, which will add to your experience.
