The gender pay gap exists in most sectors of the economy in Ghana, especially the informal sector. A paper published by Isaac Addai (2011) suggests the existence of a significant gender gap in returns in earnings (discrimination) in the informal sector labour market in Ghana, when it is compared to the modest gender gap in returns to earnings prevailing in the formal sector. Other studies have also confirmed the gender pay gap in formal sectors such as the manufacturing sector.

What does the national law say about Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value?

The labour law and the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana places an emphasis on equal pay for work of equal value. A typical example is the current public sector salary structure (single spine salary structure). The single spine salary structure is based on the principle of equal pay for work of equal value. The structure grades jobs based on evaluations carried out by the Fair Wage and Salaries Commission (FWSC). Jobs with equal value are placed on the same grade and receive equal pay.
